Teaching Calculus with Infinitesimals

چکیده

Synopsis This article argues that first semester calculus courses for non-mathematics majors should be taught using infinitesimals. This applies to both high school and undergraduate calculus courses. The use of infinitesimals in calculus, though more intuitive than the approach developed in the 19 th century, has been controversial for over two millennia. However, in the 20 th century their use was shown to be equa-consistent with the approach developed in the 19 th century. Here I first provide a brief history of infinitesimals, why they were controversial, and how they were finally put on a firm footing. Next I illustrate the intuitive nature of the use of infinitesimals. Thus I conclude that at least students not continuing on to more advanced analysis courses would be better served by learning calculus via infinitesimals.

Back to Classics: Teaching Limits Through Infinitesimals

The usual E, δ-definition of the limit of a function (whether pre sented at a rigorous or an intuitive level) requires a “candidate L” for the limit value. Thus, we have to start our first calculus course with “guessing” instead of “calculating”. In this paper we criticize the method of using calculators for the purpose of selecting candidates for L. We suggest an alternative: a working formul...

The Ghosts of Departed Quantities

Nonstandard analysis is the branch of mathematics concerned with constructing a number system that includes infinitesimals. These are numbers smaller than any real number yet still greater than zero. Although nonstandard analysis was developed in 1966 by Abraham Robinson, it is based off of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz’s construction of the calculus, created some 300 years earlier. Nonstandard ana...

An Introduction to Non-Standard Analysis and its Applications

When Newton and Leibnitz practiced calculus, they used infinitesimals, which were supposed to be like real numbers, yet of smaller magnitude than any other type of postive real number. In the 19th century, mathematicians realized they could not justify the use of infinitesimals according to their sense of rigor, so they began using definitions involving ’s and δ’s. Then, in the early 1960’s, th...

Smooth Evolution: An Examination of Dynamics in Smooth Worlds

Throughout the history of physics a key tool in the development of physical laws has been the infinitesimal. Infinitesimals entered the scene with the development of the calculus by Newton and Leibniz and went on to be used, to mention some of the most notable cases, in Euler’s derivation of the laws of hydrodynamics, in the development of analytical mechanics by Euler, Lagrange and Hamilton an...

Loss of Dimension in the History of Calculus and in Student Reasoning

Research indicates that calculus students often imagine objects losing a dimension entirely when a limit is taken, and that this image serves as an obstacle to their understanding of the fundamental theorem of calculus. Similar imagery, in the form of “indivisibles”, was similarly unsupportive of the development of the fundamental theorem in the mid-1600s, unlike the more powerful subsequent im...
